Tilton Engineering was founded in 1972 with the goal of providing technologically innovative parts at a price that the average racer could afford. Tilton made history in the 1980s by manufacturing the first carbon racing clutch. After scoring the first-ever Formula 1 race win for a carbon clutch (Ayrton Senna, Lotus-Honda, 1987 USGP-Detroit), the Tilton carbon clutch was awarded the Louis Schwitzer award for technological innovation at Indy in 1988.
