The HANS Device and the Hybrid are currently the only two Frontal Head Restraint (FHR) designs allowed by the FIA.
The HANS Device was designed almost 40 years ago by an engineer/race driver and a biomechanical engineer (who also designed crash-test dummies for GM). It was further refined by engineers from Mercedes-Benz, GM, and Ford.
The compact Hybrid was designed nearly 20 years ago by one of Detroit's top automotive restraint engineers. The design was immediately successful, but it has been further refined with the backing of Simpson Performance Products.
