Choosing and Using SuperTrapp 3S and 5S Spark Arrestor Mufflers for Small Engines
SuperTrapp Spark Arrestor Mufflers
The 3S Series can be used on engines from 2 HP to 50 HP. It is recommended for engines up to 10 HP where low noise is important, but it can be used on engines up to 50 HP where compact size is more critical than noise reduction. It can also be used after a conventional muffler for even quieter operation. USDA Forest Service Approved spark arrestor number T-100.
Flow Rating at 1 psi back pressure | Discs Required | Dia. | Length without Resonator | Length with Resonator | Weight without Resonator | Weight with Resonator | Resonator Attenuation |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Up to 250 CFM (18 discs) | 1 per 3 HP* | 3" | 3 7/8" plus 0.08" per Disc | 6 1/2" plus 0.08" per Disc | 9 oz plus 1 oz per Disc | 19 oz plus 1 oz per Disc | 3 to 5 dbA |
*Using fewer discs will reduce noise but will increase back pressure. Engines rated less than 2400 rpm or using the 3S after a conventional muffler should use 2 discs per 3 HP.
3S Installation example:
35 HP Gator-Tail Mud Motor (Briggs & Stratton Vanguard V-Twin) outboard boat application. Maximum muffling desired, small power loss acceptable. Resonator and 8 discs installed.
The 5S Series is designed for use on engines from 10 HP to 200 HP. It is recommended for engines up to 100 HP where low noise is important, but it can be used on larger engines when compact size is more critical than muffling. It can also be used after a conventional muffler for even quieter operation. USDA Forest Service Approved spark arrestor number T-101.
Flow Rating at 1 psi back pressure | Discs Required | Dia. | Length without Resonator | Length with Resonator | Weight without Resonator | Weight with Resonator | Resonator Attenuation |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Up to 1050 CFM (36 discs) | 1 per 7 HP* | 5" | 5 1/4" plus 0.13" per Disc | 9 3/8" plus 0.13" per Disc | 1 lb 6 oz plus 2.4 oz per Disc | 3 lb 4 oz plus 2.4 oz per Disc | 4 to 6 dbA |
*Using fewer discs will reduce noise but will increase back pressure. Engines rated less than 2400 rpm or using the 5S after a conventional muffler should use 2 discs per 7 HP.
5S Installation example:
120 HP VW-based engine, dune buggy application. Noise reduction less important than power output. 18 discs installed without resonator.
