What is ZDDP?
ZDDP is a special chemical ingredient in motor oils which protects valvetrain parts against premature wear. Unfortunately, being a zinc- and phosphorous-bearing chemical, ZDDP is harmful to catalytic converters. Modern hydraulic and roller lifters do not require the protection of ZDDP, so newer SM grade oils (except Red Line oils) have significantly reduced the levels of ZDDP. Older solid-lifter, flat-tappet engines (such as Formula Ford 1600) still require the protection of ZDDP. Both the Ford Camshaft & Lifter Lubricant and the Red Line Break-In Additive provide high amounts of ZDDP.
