SFI 17.2-Approved Fire Systems (Rear-Engined Cars)
FK-5-1-12 fire suppressing agent (commercially known as 3M™ Novec™ 1230) is the latest "green" replacement for ozone-depleting Halon. It is stored as a liquid under pressure that releases as a gas, which means zero cleanup afterwards. FK‑5‑1‑12 is now replacing FE-36 as the preferred gaseous fire suppressing agent in automotive and racing applications.
All of the systems shown here carry SFI 17.2 approval. The SFI 17.2 standard was written to establish minimum guidelines for fire suppression systems for single-seat, open-wheel, rear-engined cars such as formula cars and rear-engined dragsters.
SCCA now requires an SFI- or FIA-approved fire system in any car registered after 01/01/2009. These systems are also accepted in older cars.
