Simpson Camlock Lap Belts
Modern Camlock harnesses are easier to buckle than the old-fashioned Latch-and-Link version. With Latch-Link belts, you must thread the buckle tab on one side of the lap belt through each of the other belt tabs, then lock the assembly to the buckle on the other side of the lap belt -- a clumsy process that's easy to get wrong!
With Camlock harnesses, each belt gets plugged into its own slot in the buckle. You can insert them in any order, and each one stays in place while you plug in the others. The buckle releases just as quickly and cleanly as Latch-Link buckles.
The standard Simpson Camlock buckle has a flip-up release lever which is easy to grasp and operate, even with gloves on.
Pull-Up belts have the length adjuster near the mounting point. To tighten the belt, you pull the loose end up (away from the floor, towards the buckle). This is usually preferred in cramped quarters and when there is no crew to help you tighten the belts.
Pull-Down belts have the length adjuster near the buckle. To tighten the belt, you pull the loose end down (towards the floor, away from the buckle -- more accurately, sideways away from the buckle). This requires some clearance between the seat and the door bars or trans tunnel. It is often hard for a belted-in driver to get the leverage needed to tighten pull-down belts, so a helper is usually needed.
