These quality heavy-duty relays are standard equipment on most British made race cars. The four terminal version (Part No. 1160-4) has an auxiliary switched contact (live while the starter is cranking). This can be used to bypass a series ignition resistor during starting on cars that have a resistor in-line with the ignition coil. Cars not using a resistor on the ignition coil can use the 3-terminal version (Part No. 1160-3). Sold individually.
Wiring Instructions (refer to photographs)
Both versions ground through their mounting feet, so ensure good contact between the mount and the chassis ground. If you must mount the solenoid to fiberglass or an otherwise electrically isolated part, add a ground wire from the mounting foot to a good ground.
With the mounting feet downwards and the large lug terminals facing you, the small terminal on the left (see photos) receives switched power from your starter switch.
One large lug gets connected directly to the battery positive (+) post.
The other large lug gets connected directly to the starter.
Polarity of the two large lugs is not important. Use whichever allows for the cleanest routing of your cables.
4-Terminal version only:
With the mounting feet downwards and the large lug terminals facing you, the small terminal on the right (see photo of the 4-terminal version) should be connected directly to the ignition coil positive (+) post to bypass the ballast resistor. If no ballast resistor is installed, this terminal should be covered and left unconnected.
