Main studs offer several advantages over main bolts:
- More consistent main bearing cap installation (easier assembly)
- More positive main bearing cap location (no unwanted walking or fretting)
- More accurate and consistent clamping force (no fastener twist)
- Less chance of damage to female threads in block (less stress and pulling)
ARP main studs are made from 8740 chrome moly steel, heat-treated to 200,000 psi tensile strength with J-form threads that are rolled (not cut) after heat treatment (not before) for unmatched strength and precision.
